Zoological Society is one of the oldest and not-for-profit professional societies at Tribhuvan University, and was set up with the initiative of late Prof. Dr. Shiva Shankar Singh who was the first Head of the Central Department of Zoology (CDZ). Prof. Singh registered Zoological Society of Nepal (ZSN) in 1983, almost after 18 years of establishment of Central Department of Zoology and became the founding president of ZSN. The society became active up to 1995 with the efficient leadership of late Prof. Dr. Yugal Krishna Malla, former head of CDZ, and late Dr. Pralad Yonzon as its second and third president, respectively.
For a continuation of ZSN the Society was reorganized as Nepal Zoological Society (NeZoS) in 2009 with the leadership of former Head of CDZ, Prof. Dr. Jiwan Shrestha. As the president of the Society Prof. Shrestha gave the leadership up to 2014. The Fourth General Assembly of the society held in 2014 and elected a new Executive Committee led by Prof. Dr. Nanda Bahadur Singh up to 2020. The Fifth General Assembly held on 16th October 2020, and formed the new Executive Committee in the presidentship of Prof. Dr. Mahendra Maharjan.
NeZoS tries its level best to galvanize the young Zoologists under single umbrella and inspire them to their professional destination. It has felicitated 35 professors of emeritus for their contribution in the field of Zoology. The Society has published a Directory of Nepalese Zoologists and including other publications. In addition, NeZoS has also organized seminar lectures from national and international academic personalities in collaboration with CDZ.
